Nearby Smoky Mountain Road is a 4wd / ATV road that begins outside town and heads all the way down to Lake Powell ( 70 miles ) . It is quite rugged but made a great morning run as it had drained the water off well and was not too hilly . The canyon as you can see is pretty cool .
I spent the afternoon on "Hole in the Rock" road .
the road to the rock info
This is another road that runs down the plateau to Lake Powell . Back in the day (before they damned the Colorado back in the 60's) these 2 roads , along with the ferry at the end of the road I ran in Capitol Reef, were the only way across the Colorado River .
My first stop on Hole in the Rock Road was Devils Garden , a Great mix of Hoodoo's , Arches and wild Navajo Sandstone that just seems to appear out of nowhere ( after 20 miles of dirt road ) and just as quickly disappears ( if you walk the wash … it runs right through it ) . I know I will be seeing lots more hoodoos …. what a great word ….. in the rest of Utahs parks but this was a very cool intro .

who do ! |
and then down the road to the .....
Dino foot prints |
you will have to zoom and use your imagination |
Then I went to 20 mile wash a few miles down the road and tried to walk in the dinosaur footprints but the wash was running ….. washed out as it were …..and I couldn't get very close !
